R. 10172 To amend title 38, United States Code, to extend eligibility for survivors' and dependents' educational assistance to the dependent parent of a person who dies of a service-connected disability or has a total and permanent service-connected disability, and for other purposes. _______________________________________________________________________ IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES August 27, 2026 Ms. Norton introduced the following bill; which was referred to the Committee on Veterans' Affairs _______________________________________________________________________ A BILL To amend title 38, United States Code, to extend eligibility for survivors' and dependents' educational assistance to the dependent parent of a person who dies of a service-connected disability or has a total and permanent service-connected disability, and for other purposes. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, SECTION 1. ELIGIBILITY OF A DEPENDENT PARENT FOR SURVIVORS' AND DEPENDENTS' EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE. (a) Eligibility.--Section 3501(a)(1) of title 38, United States Code, is amended by adding at the end the following new subparagraph: ``(F) The dependent parent of a person described in subparagraph (A).''. (b) Conforming Amendments.-- (1) Cessation of eligibility.--Section 3511(b) of title 38, United States Code, is amended, in paragraphs (1), (2), and (4), by striking ``parent or spouse'' each place it appears and inserting ``parent, spouse, or child''. (2) Periods of eligibility.--Section 3512(b)(1)(A) of title 38, United States Code, is amended-- (A) by striking ``subparagraph (B) or (D) of section 3501(a)(1) of this title'' and inserting ``subparagraph (B), (D), or (F) of section 3501(a)(1) of this title''; and (B) by striking ``or 3501(a)(1)(E) of this title'' and inserting ``3501(a)(1)(E), or 3501(a)(1)(F) of this title''. (3) Correspondence courses.--Section 3534(b) of title 38, United States Code, is amended-- (A) by striking ``eligible spouse or surviving spouse'' and inserting ``eligible spouse, surviving spouse, or eligible dependent parent''; (B) by striking ``such spouse's entitlement'' and inserting ``such spouse's or dependent parent's entitlement''; and (C) by striking ``paid to the spouse'' and inserting ``paid to the spouse or dependent parent''. <all>
